Gary Wayne Reid, Sr.

Gary Wayne Reid, Sr. passed away peacefully February 17, 2024, at his residence in Concord, NC surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 1, 1945, in Cabarrus County, NC.  Gary was preceded in death by his father, Joe Richard Reid and his mother, Florence Beulah Auton Reid. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Brooks Reid and a brother, Ricky Reid.

Gary is survived by his spouse Judy Reid; brother Ronnie Reid of Paducah, Ky.; sister Shelia Triner of Rockwell; son Gary Reid, Jr. and daughter-in-law Tammy Reid of Rockwell; daughter Leslie Cooke and her husband Patrick Cooke of Salisbury; son Christopher Abernathy; daughter Kimberly Podwika of Coral Springs, FL.; granddaughter Skylar Knowles; grandson Austin Cooke; grandson Taylor Abernathy; granddaughter Tarren Hayes; grandson Hayden Abernathy; grandson Kyle Podwika; grandson Christian Podwika; great granddaughter Sarah Petersen; great granddaughters Soleil and Marley Hayes; and great grandson Hayden Jax Abernathy.  Gary was a graduate of A.L. Brown High School and a US Army Veteran.  He served in Vietnam where he received a purple heart/with cluster.  Following his discharge, he was a truck driver who delivered freight. He enjoyed playing video games, playing his bass guitar, woodworking, and cars (including his 1932 Ford Coupe).

The visitation for Mr. Reid will be 1:00 P.M.- 4:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Private graveside services will be held with military honors.

A Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 229 Westover Avenue, Kannapolis, NC. 28081.  The family requests that any flowers for the church service be delivered directly to the church.  Memorials may be sent to Wounded Warriors Project, 1990 Fordham Dr. Suite 100, Fayetteville, NC 28304.
