Obituary: Gay Clayton Hayer, 78 After a three year battle with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Gay Clayton Hayer passed away at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, NC on Monday, April 3, 2017 at the age of 78. Gay is predeceased by her parents, Crawford Alexander Clayton and Mary Frances "Pud" Fisher Clayton, her sister, Ethel "Doodle" Fisher Clayton Caraway, and her brother, Bobby Joe Clayton. Gay is survived by her husband of 56 years, Larry Wilson Hayer, of Kannapolis, her children and their spouses, Daphne Laurel Hayer of Albemarle, Clayton Alexander Hayer and Dawn Laws Hayer of Cary, and Frances Gay Hayer Caton and Mark Eric Caton of Concord, and two granddaughters, Sophia Grace Hayer and Olivia Hope Hayer, both residents of Cary, North Carolina. She will be lovingly remembered by many other relatives. Gay Nell Clayton was born on March 24, 1939 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. She graduated from Winecoff High School in 1957. She married Larry Hayer at Midway United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, NC on September 10, 1960. She was primarily a homemaker, but she also worked as an enumerator for the Federal Census Bureau and as a library assistant at the Chesterfield County Public Library in Chester, Virginia. Gay enjoyed watching sports on TV, and volunteering at her church library. But her true passion was music. She sang in many church choirs over her lifetime, but was most recently a member of the choir at Midway UMC. She was also a longtime member of the Singing Saints, which practices and performs at Forest Hill UMC in Concord, NC. The visitation will be held at Whitley Funeral Home, 1748 Dale Earnhardt Blvd, Kannapolis, NC on April 5, 2017 from 6 until 8 pm. The funeral service will be held at Midway United Methodist Church, 708 S, Main St., Kannapolis, NC on Thursday, April 6th at 10 am with Rev. Laura Elliott officiating. Interment to follow immediately at Carolina Memorial Park, 601 Mt Olivet Rd, Concord, NC 28025. After a brief graveside service, family and friends are invited to gather at the home of Wesley and Andrea Kiser, 150 Arlington Ave SE, Concord, NC to celebrate Gay's rich, wonderful life.
