George Preston Chewning

Obituary: George Preston Chewning, age 86, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at CMC-NorthEast, Concord, NC after a short period of declining health. He was born June 23, 1927 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son of the late George T. Chewning and Lundy Harwood Chewning. George was a graduate of Winecoff High School. After high school he entered military service joining the U.S. Army having served during the end of World War II. George was employed with the former Cannon Mills Company, Plant One, in the electric shop working with the engineers for forty years until his retirement. He enjoyed being a member of Royal Oaks Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC where he spent many quality hours. He was also proud of working many years part-time at Whitley's Funeral Home. Throughout the years George loving being active in masonry having been a member of Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge # 626 where he had served as secretary for many years. He continued in various ways to promote their values and assisted in their fundraising efforts when he could. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Frances (Becky) Bell Chewning. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Leon Smith. Burial will follow at 2:00 P.M. at the National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the funeral home. Survivors include his son, Sammy L. Chewning & wife, Beth of Landis, NC; his daughter, Gail C. Huffstetler & husband, John of Kannapolis, NC; four grandchildren, Holly, Derek, and Dustin Huffstetler and Jeff Chewning; one brother, James E. Chewning of Landis, NC; and two sisters, Bobbie L. Stikeleather of Concord, NC and Sue Wilson of Charleston, SC; a great-grandson, Caleb Alexander Abad; and a special friend, Helen Simpson of Kannapolis, NC. Memorials may be made to Royal Oaks Baptist Church, 904 Texas Street, Kannapolis, NC 28083.
Visitation: 6:00-8:00 PM, Wednesday August 21, 2013 Whitley's Funeral Home.

Service: 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 22, 2013 Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel

Interment: National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC.
