George Marshall Smith

October 29, 1939 — December 12, 2021

George Marshall Smith, 82, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully at his home, Sunday December 12, 2021. Born October 29, 1939 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late George T. and Hazel Raper Smith.

George honorably served his country as a linguist in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. During his working years, he was a computer programmer and consultant, working mainly in the banking industry. In his younger years, George was an avid sports fan and quite an athlete. He played Legion baseball and also played basketball. George was active in Parents Without Partners and the choir at Hickory Grove Baptist throughout the years. He also loved shag dancing. Smiling with his eyes, he always had a joke ready.

George or "Pawpaw" as many knew him was the foundation of his family, the patriarch who loved and cherished his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. If you asked, he would talk about them all day."

George is survived by two daughters, Maureen "Reenie" Smith Davis of Charlotte and Cassie Smith Akers and husband Jeff of Huntersville; four grandchildren, Connor V. Davis, Saundra Singleton and husband Alex, Shelbie Smith and Sidney Bumgarner; and three great grandchildren, Sailor, Clarke, and Gunner Marshall.

A funeral service to honor George's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 17, 2021 at Blackwelder Park Baptist Church, 2204 Summit Ave. Kannapolis. Interment will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove. The family will receive friends from noon until 1:00 p.m. at the church Friday prior to the service.
