George Woodfin Moose

George Woodfin Moose, age 87, of China Grove died March 23, 2023 after several years of declining health at his home with his family by his side.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 1, at Carolina Memorial Park with Rev. Tom Dolinger officiating. His family will receive friends at Whitley’s Funeral Home from 12:30 to 1:30 PM on Saturday prior to the Graveside service.

George was born December 24, 1935 in Taylorsville NC, the youngest son of the late Paul Lee and Hessie Wike Moose. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brothers Jack and Graydon “Cool” Moose, his sister Dorothy M. Starnes and his oldest son, David W. Moose.

George W. Moose retired from the NC Highway Patrol after spending many years working in the garage/painting areas generally managing the Inmate Release program participants.  He loved to work with people and teach others how to do things for themselves.  George was famous for his watermelons that he would haul up from SC. He was known as “Watermelon Man” to his friends because he loved eating watermelon and he could always pick a “good one”. His second career was running multiple booths at the Webb Road Flea Market prior to the fire that destroyed it and his business.  George never returned there and instead took up riding his golf cart with his dogs.  There were very few things that he could not do and was always lending a helping hand to figure out how to “fix” something.

Those who are left to cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Katie Shelby Moose, his daughter Anna Wyke (Jim), his sons Rickey Moose (Cindy) and Kenneth Moose (Tammy) all of China Grove, his daughter in law Wanda Moose of Salisbury and his sister Helen Walters of Norfolk VA. He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
