George Newman Smith

June 13, 1945 — December 14, 2018

Obituary: George Newman Smith passed away peacefully at his home in Kannapolis on Friday, December 14, 2018. He was born to George Winfred Smith and Ann Smith Fredrick of Hillsboro, NC on June 13, 1945. He was educated in the Orange County Schools and attended Western Carolina University and Elon College. He was a contractor by trade until his retirement. Newman was an active member of St. James the Greater Roman Catholic Church, a devout follower of the Catholic Church, and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. Newman is preceded in death by his parents, George and Ann, and his loving wife, Beth Brown. He leaves behind seven children-Christopher Smith (Tammy), Eric Brown (Laura), Jennifer Smith Leatherman (Dale), Shane Brown, Nick Smith (Trina), Keelan Brown (Rachel), and Brittany Smith Wear (Johnny). He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In his later years, Newman rarely missed a breakfast with his dear friends Curt, Gary, and Paul. He enjoyed meeting with his children to have lunch or dinner and watching his grandchildren grow up. He was an avid reader and never had trouble telling a story. Newman always enjoyed a good laugh, unless it was at Carolina's expense. His inspiration for life came from his grandmother, Bessie Riley, who loved and cherished him until her passing. Newman never met a stranger, and was loved by many. He will never be forgotten by the ones left behind, and will always be in our hearts. Until we meet again. Private services will be held in Hillsborough at a later date. Memorials may be made to St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 139 Manor Ave. SW, Concord, NC 28025. Online condolences may be sent to www.whitleysfuneralhome.com
