Obituary: George Edward Thomas, 83, of Kannapolis died Saturday, February 18, 2017 at CMC-NorthEast in Concord after a period of declining health. A graveside service will be held at Carolina Memorial Park at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 21. George was born October 16, 1933 in Union Co., a son of the late George W. and Minnie Oliver Thomas. He moved to this area from Monroe to work for Cannon Mills. George worked in Plant #1, as a weaver and a fixer in #4 weave room, for almost 40 years, retiring in 1991. He was of the Baptist faith. George was a loving and loyal husband and a devoted father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Moses Thomas, who died in 1988 and by 3 sisters. He is survived by his second wife, Brenda Stirewalt Thomas of the home, his sons; Ronny Lee Abernathy of Salisbury and Ray Abernathy, Tommy Rhodes and Charles Rhodes, all of Kannapolis and daughter, Pam Jackson of Huntersville and his sister, Sara Simpson of Concord. He is also survived by grandchildren; Shannon, Jessie, Jason and Linda Rhodes, Stacey Abernathy, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
