Obituary: Kannapolis, NC George Y. Barnhardt, 94, of Kannapolis passed away Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Living Center in Concord. He was born April 24, 1922 in Cabarrus County, a son of the late W.A. and Mary Upright Barnhardt. He was preceded in death by sisters, Julia Barnhardt, Ethel Burr, Ruth Smith, Corlee Barnhardt and Annie Mae Gibson, brothers, Charlie, James Kenneth I, Leroy, Jay, Homer and Frank Jr. George retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1 after 46 years. He was a veteran of the US Navy where he served during WW II 1942-46. He was a life member of the VFW Post 8989. George loved gardening. At the Living Center, he enjoyed playing Bingo and rewarding people with small bottles of pepsi as a token of appreciation. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, April 3, 2017 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rev. Johnny Barnhardt. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 PM prior at Whitley's. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with military honors. He is survived by his wife, Frances Sheets Barnhardt, step-daughter, Brenda King (Butch), grandchildren, Chris King (Jamie), Todd King (Joni), Michelle Adams (Rodney), Suzanne Bost (Chris), great grandchildren, Jayci and Shelbie Bost, and Charlee Adams. He also was Uncle George to a multiple number of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tucker Hospice House, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
