George "Bill" William Messer

George William (Bill) Messer, age 95, passed away peacefully at his home July 22, 2023.  Bill was a lifelong resident of Kannapolis NC and a faithful member of First Baptist Church.  He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Hilda Sides Messer, his daughter Laura Spears and husband Mark, son Mitch Messer, and brother-in-law Bobby Sides and wife Frances.  He is preceded in death by his father, Edward Messer and mother, Lena Messer; his sisters Lillian Long, Zoe Byrd, Phillis Alexander and brother Edward Messer.  Also surviving are his grandchildren, Andrew Conway and wife Kristen; Leah Tonissen and husband Drew; John David Conway and wife Hillary; Samantha Messer and William Messer.  Great grandchildren Hunter, Holden and Hannah Conway; Turner Messer; Kate and Elise Tonissen; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill served in the US Army during the Korean War.  He worked at Cannon Mills Co. for over 40 years as a Cotton Classer.  He served his church for many years as a youth Sunday school teacher and Deacon.

Bill was an avid golfer and had bragging rights to 2 holes in 1 at Kannapolis Country Club.  He loved playing American Legion Baseball and shared his love of the sport with “back alley” neighborhood children by organizing an annual end of school year baseball game and cookout.  He also loved to dance!  He and Hilda traveled near and far for a good square or round dance!

There will be a celebration of Bill’s life on Saturday, July 29.  The family will receive friends at 10:00am and the service will follow at 11:00 at First Baptist Church, 101 N Main Street, Kannapolis.
