Obituary: Gertrude Mitchell, 97 years of age, of Piedmont Crossing in Thomasville, NC quietly entered her heavenly home on June 18, 2012. Mrs. Mitchell, formerly of Kannapolis, NC, was born February 14, 1915 on a farm near Darlington, MD. She was preceded in death by her parents James Melville and Cylena Jones Morris and her husband, John D. Mitchell, Sr. Survivors include her son, John D. Mitchell, Jr. and wife Pattie of Kannapolis; her daughter, Carolyn Martin and husband Ronald of Charlotte, her son David T. Mitchell and wife Helen of Prosperity, SC. Also, grandson Stuart Mitchell and wife Beth and their children Taylor and John Kyle of Shelby, NC; granddaughter Kristen Mitchell of Kannapolis, NC; granddaughter Julia Cook and husband, Ken and their son Bryan of Matthews, NC; granddaughter Robin Martin of Matthews, NC; granddaughter Emilie Mitchell of Charlotte, NC; step-granddaughter Marci Harvey and her husband Jason and their children Reece and Camryn of Clemmons, NC and step-granddaughter Kelli Fowler and husband Trent and their children Brandon and Wesley of Prosperity, SC. Gertrude graduated from Dublin High School, Dublin, MD in 1931. She attended one year at the University of Maryland then went on to graduate from Church Home and Infirmary Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD in 1936 followed by additional training @ the University of PA in 1937. She worked @ Church Home & Infirmary Hospital as Operating Room Supervisor 1937-1941 with a one year assignment in Fayetteville, NC. She married John D. Mitchell, Sr in 1941 and moved to Charlotte, NC where she worked at Charlotte Memorial Hospital from 1941-1942. They lived in Concord, NC and Darlington, MD before moving to Kannapolis, NC in 1948. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 50 years. A proficient vegetable, fruit & flower gardener, wonderful cook, loving and caring mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, daughter, wife, friend and nurse. She was a quiet, unassuming Christian example for her family and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church Monday, June 25th at 2:00pm. The family will receive friends at the church during the hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church 416 E. 1st Street Kannapolis, NC 28083. The family would like to thank Piedmont Crossing and their dedicated staff for the loving care and concern provided over the years. Also the family would like to thank both the special staff of Hospice of Davidson County as well as a very dedicated caregiver, Barbara Melton, of the Greensboro Home Instead staff who faithfully met Mrs. Mitchell's needs. Whitley Funeral Home in Kannapolis, NC is serving the Mitchell family.
