Glen Powell, a beloved family man, passed away after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. He was 66. Glen was a devoted husband to his wife of 36 years, Janet, and a proud father to his three daughters, Katie Miller, Nikki Haney, and Marla Powell.
Glen is survived by his loving wife, Janet Herring Powell, and his daughters, Sergeant Marla Powell (NCSHP), Nikki (Jeff) Haney, and Katie Miller. He was a proud grandfather of Amber Miller and one great grandson Stetson Ellis. He also leaves behind his mother Katie Morton Powell, his sister, Glenda Powell Parker. Glen was predeceased in death by his father, Sergeant Levi Powell (NCSHP), and his brother, Sam Allen Powell. He will also be fondly remembered by his nephews, Chase, Charles, Chad Parker and Robert Powell. He is also survived by his sister in-law Robin Powell and his other sister in-law Starr Bennett and brother in-law Blair Bennett.
A skilled mechanic by trade, Glen's career was marked by diverse roles, from working with Ditch Witch and truck driving to dedicating 20 years of service at the Department of Transportation (DOT). Known for his exceptional abilities, Glen could operate any equipment at DOT, including motor scrapers, trenchers, snow removal machinery, and heavy equipment. His work ethic and commitment to excellence left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the community.
Glen cherished his family deeply. His daughter Katie works with a construction company specializing in culverts and piping installation, Nikki is employed by Food Lion, and Marla serves as a North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sergeant in Iredell County. Glen's pride in his daughters was evident in his unwavering support. His daughter Marla, a standout basketball player at A.L. Brown, where she became one of the few to score a thousand points in her career.
A sports enthusiast, Glen was a loyal fan of the NFL's Detroit Lions and had a passion for women's basketball, frequently attending high school and college games. He was known for maintaining his family's vehicles meticulously and enjoyed motorcycle rides, often taking short trips to the mountains and exploring the back roads of North Carolina.
Glen's journey through life was marked by his faith, having accepted Jesus as his Savior and dedicating time daily to studying the Bible and praying. His legacy of love, strength, and devotion will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him.
The family will receive friends on Saturday August 3, 2024, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Whitley’s Funeral Home, 1748 Dale Earnhardt Blvd. Kannapolis, NC 28083 with a Celebration of Glen’s Life Service beginning at 4:00 PM in the Funeral Home Chapel.
