Grace Hopkins Riggs

Obituary: Grace Hopkins Riggs, 82, of Concord, passed away on August, 13, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Riggs was born November 22, 1931, in Concord. She was the oldest daughter of the late Lewis Thomas Hopkins and Pearl Ervin Hopkins. She was married to James S. "Red" Riggs, Sr. for over 61 years. She is also survived by her daughter, Susan D. Riggs of Charlotte; her son, James S. "Jim" Riggs, Jr. and wife, Darlene W. Riggs; her grandson, Alan W. Riggs and her granddaughter, Erin F. Riggs of Kings Mountain; two sisters: Peggy H. Lewis of Mount Pleasant and Jane H. Shoe of Dublin, Georgia. She is also survived by many other loving relatives and friends. Mrs. Riggs was valedictorian of her graduating class of 1950 from Winecoff High School. She graduated from Evans Business College. She served as a substitute teacher at Winecoff Elementary, Winecoff Junior High, and Northwest Cabarrus Senior High Schools. She loved reading, cooking, hummingbirds, roses, meeting her friends for breakfast, and spending time with her family. A lifelong member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Concord, she was honored to have been active as an officer and a member of the K. Lee Scott Circle. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, August 15, 2014 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis, NC. Services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Wes Judy. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. Memorials may be made to Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, 301 Mt. Olivet Church Road, Concord, NC 28025. Online condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com.
