Obituary: Grayham "Whit" Lee Whitley, 77, of Kannapolis died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at CMC-NorthEast, Concord following a short period of declining health. He was born June 26, 1932 in Richmond County, NC son of the late Clifford and Alma Thompson Whitley. Mr. Whitley retired in 1994 from the bleachery dept. of Cannon Mills Plt. #1 following 44 years of service. He served in the US Army having been stationed in Germany from 1953-1955. He was a lifelong fisherman, hunter and gardener. He was a member of the Early Morning Hardee's Group. He loved to spend time with his family. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Duane Melton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00-2:00 prior to the funeral. Entombment will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan County Honor Guard and Army National Guard. At other times the family will be at the residence. He is survived by his wife of 54 years: Betty Rumple Whitley, two daughters: Jill Linton and husband Mike of Kannapolis and Donna Coble of Mt. Pleasant. He is also survived by three brothers, Robert, Chase and Ernest Whitley, four sisters, Susie Barker, Pauline Melton, Betty Ranson, and Judy Tyner. Another sister, Hettie Campbell preceded him in death. He is also survived by grandchidren, Kevin Linton and wife Jessica, Matt Linton and Leah Deal and a great grandson, Collin Linton.
