Obituary: Mr. Gwyn David Hartsoe, 81, passed away Monday morning, July 2, 2018, at CHS-Northeast Medical Center, following a period of declining health. Born June 4, 1937 in Cabarrus County, he was a son of the late Elmer Wilson Hartsoe, Sr. and Belle Rash Hartsoe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Elmer W. Hartsoe, Jr. and his sister, Phyllis Hartsoe Carter. Mr. Hartsoe retired as owner of Hartsoe Battery in 2013, which began in 1958. He and his brother Elmer, owned Hartsoe Brothers Funny Car Racing. Gwyn honorably served his country with the US Army and was a street rodder. A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Hartsoe will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Loving family members include his wife, Rachel Herlocker Hartsoe; his daughter, Marla Goodnight (Michael); grandchildren, Christopher Goodnight (Melissa) and Constance Goodnight; his great-grandchildren, Hadley, Caden and Sawyer Goodnight; and special nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 5th from 12:00-2:00 pm at Whitley's Funeral Home. Funeral services to remember and celebrate the life of Mr. Hartsoe will begin at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel, conducted by Rev. Mike Hubbard. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with military honors. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County, St. Jude Hospital or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
