Obituary: Kannapolis, NC- Harold Eugene Belk, age 86, died Monday, October 12, 2009 at CMC-NorthEast, Concord, NC after a short illness. He was born January 8, 1923 in Rowan County, NC, the son of the late Howard L. Belk and Maude Karriker Belk. He was a graduate of J.W. Cannon High School and Kings Business College. He was employed with Cabarrus Bank & Trust Company, retiring from Northwestern Bank after its merger with Cabarrus Bank. A veteran of the U.S. Army Air Forces, he served in the 446th Bomber Group in Europe during World War II as a pilot of a B24 receiving an air medal with two oak leaf clusters. He was also a member & past-master of Cannon Memorial Lodge for more than 50 years and had served on the Executive Board of the former Cabarrus Memorial Hospital. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Vessie Chapman Belk, whom he married in 1947 until her death in 2008; his sisters, Doris Gardner in 1990 and Mary Frances York in 2009. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church serving as Treasurer for a number of years as well as the Men of the Church, and the Board of Deacons. The funeral service will be 3:00 P.M. Thursday, October 15, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Mr. Chris Edscorn. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the church prior to the service. Survivors include his two daughters, Amy B. Hurst of Kannapolis, NC and Ann B. Noble & husband, W. Larkin of Sandy, Utah; his son, Harold E. (Hal) Belk, Jr. & wife, Louise of Cary, NC; His grandchildren, Jason Hurst & wife, Elise of Monroe, NC, Jeremy Hurst & wife, Karen of China Grove, NC, Brent Noble & wife, Nicole and Thomas Larkin Noble, both of Sandy, UT, Carolann Belk of Cary, NC; His step-grandchildren, Jeff Hurst of Concord, NC, Daphne Hurst Brown of Chapel Hill, NC, and W. Larkin Noble, Jr. of Belmont, CA; his great-grandchildren, Kesler and Presley Kate Noble of Sandy, UT and Carson Wayne Hurst, China Grove, NC. The family wishes to thank Dr. Peter Chikes for his many kindnesses over the last several years; Dr. Doug Kelling for his compassionate care over the last 30 years; the nurses and staff of the pulmonary care unit of CMC-NorthEast for the love, care, and concern shown to our father during the days spent in their care.
