Obituary: Harry Walker Nichols, Jr., age 95, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2015 in La Plata, MD where he had lived with his daughter for many months. He was born November 11, 1919 in Horry County, SC, the son of the late Harry W. Nichols, Sr. and Lela Perritt Nichols. Harry served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He always shared with family and friends that his time spend there was important to him serving under Gen. George S. Patton. He lived in various locations throughout the years. He settled in Maryland in his earlier career having worked at I.B.M. as a printer first and later as a Special Police Officer. After retiring in 1982 he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Melissa and David, who were the joy of his life. He moved to Landis, NC in 1986 and reunited with his high school sweetheart, Sara Frye. They were married and spent almost thirty years together until her death last March 15th. Harry loved his church while living in the Kannapolis area, First Baptist Church, where he served as an usher for many years and enjoyed attending Bible studies there with his wife. In his later years, his hobbies included doing word search puzzles and a love for football especially being a diehard Redskins fan. He also fondly enjoyed driving new cars from one dealership to another up and down the East coast after retirement. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Dr. Thomas E. Cabaniss. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC with military rites conducted by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will also receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service. Survivors include his daughter, Mary Ann Stewart & husband, Michael Lin of La Plata, MD; two grandchildren, Melissa Ann Kellstrom of Alexandria, VA and David Mitchell Kellstrom & wife, Robin of Crofton, MD; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Huckabee of Surfside Beach, SC.
