Obituary: Harry Leslie "Red" Smith, 91, of Kannapolis, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. He passed away at Morningside Assisted Living center in Concord with his family by his side. His death follows a period of declining health. Mr. Smith was born in Sumter County, S.C., on Dec. 24, 1923, the son of the late James and Celia Smith. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Middleton Smith, two brothers; Thomas Smith and Roy Smith and two sisters, Ruby Smith Hickson and Betty Smith Geddings. Red was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully for nearly 50 years as a Sunday School teacher, Elder and Deacon. He was recipient of the Deacon Emeritus award. Mr. Smith served in the US Army during World War II from 1943-1945. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and a wonderful example of Christian, faith, hope and love. Along with his wife, Sarah, he was co-owner of Red's Oil Company and Red's Tire Service which became a fixture in the Midway area of Kannapolis for nearly 40 years . He was an avid fisherman and was most at peace in his boat on the lake. Left to cherish his memories are his two daughters, Joyce Smith Dayvault and husband Robert of Kannapolis, Harriett Smith Helms and husband Jamie of Locust; son, Wayne Smith and wife Charlee of Kannapolis; grandchildren, Scott Dayvault, Mark Dayvault and wife Sherra, Kristen S. Sheets and husband Jeff, Alison and Emily Strickland, and Logan Helms; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Austin and Carson Dayvault, and Harrison Sheets; sister, Ethel Gibbs; brothers, Sidney Smith and wife Aileen, Alfred Smith and wife Marie , Jesse Smith and wife Faye. Visitation and Services: A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Smith will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. R.J. Hammond and Rev. Max Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday at Whitley's Funeral Home. Memorials: Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 703 Buick Ave., Kannapolis, NC 28083 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081. The family would like to say a special "thank you" to all the caregivers who provided excellent care to him over the years.
