Hazel "Dink" Black Stirewalt

Obituary: Kannapolis, NC- Hazel Black (Dink) Stirewalt, age 89, died Sunday, September 2, 2012 at the Hospice of Catawba Valley, Newton, NC after two months of declining health. He was born January 18, 1923 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son of the late Walter Alfred Stirewalt and Dora Slough Stirewalt. He was a lifetime resident of Kannapolis, NC until moving to be close to his daughter in 2006. Dink was employed with the former Cannon Mills Company, Plant #1 Set Dept. for over forty years until his retirement. Dink was a Pearl Harbor survivor having served in the 24th Infantry Divisions of the U.S. Army during World War II. He participated in several amphibious landings during the war and awarded the Bronze Star medal. He was a member of Allen-Graham Masonic Lodge # 695. Dink was also a member and past-commander the V.F.W. Poston-Perkins Post 8989. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Baity Stirewalt who September 9, 2006. A graveside service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC followed by Masonic rites. The family will receive friends at the grave after the graveside service. Survivors include his son, Terry Gray Stirewalt of Maple Grove, MN; his daughter, Christy Lynn Andersen of Hickory, NC; grandson, John Andersen; one sister, Valda Lampert of Kannapolis, NC.
