Hazel Blevins Leonard

Obituary: Kannapolis, NC- Hazel Blevins Leonard, age 95, went to be with her Lord with her family at her bedside on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at CMC-NorthEast after a short illness. She was born March 29, 1914 in Ashe County, NC, the daughter of the late William Arthur Blevins and Annie Johnston Blevins. She was employed with the former Cannon Mills Company, Plt.#1 Sewing Room for 35 years until her retirement. She was a very active member of North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church, Kannapolis, NC where she taught Sunday School for over 12 years and was involved in various church activities. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by husband, Melvin Glenn Leonard, March 14, 1981; a son, Kenneth Leonard; a daughter, Helen Williams; three sisters, Lena Ashley, Vesta Teague, and Alma Stancil; and two brothers, Gwyn and Joseph Blevins. The funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, June 18, 2009 at North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Steve Beam and Rev. Trent Patterson. Her body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Whitley's Funeral Home, Kannapolis, NC. Survivors include two daughters, Yvonne Hinson and Mary Watson, two sons, Joe Leonard of Charlotte, NC and David W. Leonard of China Grove, NC; one brother, Fred Blevins of Athens, GA; twenty grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and thirteen great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church, 314 W. 12th Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081. On-line condolences may be made to www.whitleysfuneralhome.com.
