Obituary: Helen Byrd Dickson, age 83, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the home of her daughter, Delaine Sherrill in Concord, NC. She had been in declining health for the past year. Helen was born April 22, 1931 in Cabarrus County, NC, the daughter of the late Charlie W. Byrd and Lillian Smith Byrd. She was a 1949 graduate of the former J.W. Cannon High School in Kannapolis, NC. Helen was employed with Belk's Department Store, Kannapolis, where she first met her husband. She later worked at the Bake Shop and Merle Norman Cosmetics before going to work at the former Cannon Mills Company, Plant One, in the Set & Crash Dept. for thirty-five years until her retirement. She was a member of Coddle Creek A.R.P. Church, Mooresville, NC. She has very active for more than fifty years with the Order of the Eastern Star, Eureka Chapter 277, China Grove, NC. In earlier years she was active with the Mariam Winslow Chapter in Kannapolis where she had served as Worthy Matron. Her family fondly remembers Helen's love of gardening and going with her husband to antique sales. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by two brothers, Charles E. Byrd and Robert L. Byrd; and a sister, Patricia Lane Byrd. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2014 at Coddle Creek A.R.P. Church, Mooresville, NC officiated by Rev. Jamie Hunt and Rev. R. Wayne Dickson. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Friday at the church prior to the service. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Ralph T. Dickson; two children, Delaine D. Sherrill of Concord, NC; Ralph T. Dickson, Jr. of Mooresville, NC; four grandchildren; fourteen grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; and one brother, Guy Richard Byrd of Cleveland, NC.
