Obituary: Helen Layton McClure, age 85, died Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Best of Care Assisted Living, Kannapolis, NC after 5 years of declining health. She was born April 14, 1924 in Cabarrus County, NC, the daughter of the late Charles Olin Layton and Ruth Roland Layton. Helen had long worked in the food industry where she was last employed for the last 12 years before retirement at the K & W Cafeteria, Concord, NC. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Concord, NC where she was honored with a lifetime membership with the United Methodist Women because of her outstanding service. Upon the death of her mother in 1949, Helen took on the role and responsibilities of the mother to help raise her younger brothers and sisters. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother making them her life. She was a compassionate individual who befriended and assisted those less fortunate than she. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Worth McClure who died September 5, 2005; three brothers, Robert Layton, Archie Layton, and Craig Layton; and two sisters, Marie Sapp and Myrell Furr. The funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 22, 2010 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Dr. Glenn L. Myers, Jr. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, January 21, 2010 at the funeral home. Survivors include her two sons, Mark W. McClure & wife, Tina of Kannapolis, NC and Rev. Dr. Edward Lee McClure & wife, Sylvia of Siler City, NC; Three brothers, R.C. Layton of Concord, NC, Hoy Layton of Gainesville, GA, and Terry Layton of Winston-Salem, NC; Two grandchildren, Laura A.
