Obituary: SPARTANBURG, SC Helen Sloop McGinnis, 83, wife of Elgin E. McGinnis, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016. Born April 3, 1932 in Kannapolis, North Carolina, Helen was one of the fourteen children of the late Jeremiah Waldo and Bessie Morgan Sloop. She worked for Sherills Upholstery in Hickory, N.C. and Hunt Manufacturing in Statesville, N.C. for many years. Helen was a longtime member of St., John's Lutheran in Statesville and a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Spartanburg, S.C. Helen was an active member in the churches she attended throughout her life. Her legacy was her faithfulness to our Lord Jesus and His Church. This legacy has been passed down to her family in a wonderful way. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. In addition to her husband, Helen is survived by her children, Lamar McGinnis and his wife, Debbie, Robert McGinnis, and Kim Stroud and her husband, Ben; grandchildren, Chris McGinnis, Nicholas McGinnis, Andrew McGinnis, Joshua McGinnis, Meghan McGinnis, Talon and Meredith Stroud, Catey McGinnis, Camen Stroud, and Rachel Perez; one great granddaughter, Abigail Smith; brothers, Jacob Sloop, Tommy Sloop, and Franklin Sloop; and sisters, Margaret York, Linda Sloop, and Thelma Honeycutt. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, 2 p.m. at Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis, N.C. Committal will be held in Carolina Memorial Park.
