Obituary: Helen Grace Smith Storey, age 88, went to be with her Lord in Heaven peacefully surrounded by her family & friends on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at the Bob & Carolyn Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC. She was born November 29, 1921 in Richmond County, NC, the daughter of the late Eugene Mason Smith and Minnie Elizabeth Covington Smith. She was employed with the former Cannon Mills Co. Plt.#1 Bleachery Dept. & worked a total of 35 years until her retirement. She was also a devoted mother, homemaker, and grandmother. She attended Central Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC and had been active at Westside Church of the Nazarene in earlier years. Her family, friends, and her constant faith in God were very important to Helen. Her favorite things included cooking & baking, caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid reader and her favorite gifts were books. She will be missed every day by her family & remembered for her strength, strong determination, and unselfish generosity to others. Helen never met a stranger and they all became her friends. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Carl O. Storey; a son, Carl (Bicky) Storey, Jr.; a sister, Flora Cooper; and a brother, Eugene Carson Smith. The funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 18, 2009 at Central Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Curtis Parker, Rev. Charles Savage, and Rev. Ronnie Cooper, and Rev. Amy Karriker. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church prior to the service. Survivors include her children, Carole Skelton & husband, Robert of Spartanburg, SC, Elaine Hyatt and husband, David of Kannapolis, NC, Kimberly Cromer & husband, Joseph (Buddy) of China Grove, NC, Ted Storey & wife, Debra of China Grove, NC and Donnie Storey & wife, Dana of Kannapolis, NC; fourteen grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The family wants to thank the loving caregivers, Advance Home Health and the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County who supported her during her illness, and especially her doctor, Erica Steinbacher of Cabarrus Family Physicians, her pastors, friends, and neighbors for their loving support.
