Obituary: Landis, NC- Herbert Donald McWaters, age 82, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at CMC-NorthEast, Concord, NC after a short serious illness.He was born April 6, 1929 in Chester County, SC, the son of the late Samuel Walker McWaters and Lillie Shaver McWaters. In earlier years he served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division and was a decorated Vietnam Veteran who was a master paratrooper. He was in service from 1951 to 1971. In his last 15 years, he was active as a chaplain/administrator in the military. He also spent time in the Dominican Republic. In later years he was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years until his retirement. He was a dedicated Christian and active member of Blackwelder Park Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC where he was a former deacon, usher, and participated in various church activities. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Blackwelder Park Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Stan Welch, Rev. Roger Head, & Rev. James Pauley. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, June 3, 2011 at Whitley's Funeral Home, Kannapolis, NC. The family will be at the home the remainder of the time. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Cora Freeze McWaters; a daughter, Debra McWaters Poplin & husband, Larry of Kannapolis, NC; a son, Rick McWaters & wife, Sharon of Kannapolis, NC; three grandchildren, Avery Poplin, Brittany McWaters, and Morgan McWaters; a sister, Dorothy Overcash of Kannapolis, NC; and a number of nieces & nephews.Memorials may be made to Blackwelder Park Baptist Church, c/o Food Pantry Program, 2299 N.
