Obituary: Herbert "Shorty" Doyle Thomas, age 85, of Kannapolis died Wednesday, May 6, 2015 after a period of declining health. His funeral will be held at 7:00 PM Friday, May 8 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Hubbard officiating. The family will receive friends at Whitley's Funeral Home from 5:30 to 7:00 PM prior to the funeral. Private interment will follow at a later date. Herbert was born February 2, 1930 in Union Co. NC, a son of the late Claude and Leslie Thomas. He was lifelong area resident and a proud veteran of the US Army. Herbert worked as a packer and security guard for Associated Grocers of Charlotte until he retired. He enjoyed fishing, the mountains and talking on his CB radio. Herbert was a member of the Towel City CB Radio Club, where he was known as "Shortman". He will always be remembered by his family as a generous and kindhearted man, who loved his family dearly and will be dearly missed. In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his siblings, Sam, Harold, Loumis, Wade and Bobby Thomas and Edith Parker and most recently by his son Richard Thomas in Dec. of 2014, his wife, Otha Rushing Thomas in Jan. of 2015. He is survived by his daughter, Dianne Ludwick (Robert), his grandchildren; Sherri Jackson (Rick) and Eric Needham (Kim), all of Kannapolis, his great-grandchildren; Matt, Jason, Caitlin, Christopher and Jennifer, his sisters, Joyce Roszack and Beauna Yost and his brother, Billie Thomas.
