Obituary: Herman Lee Upright, age 87, passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC. He and his wife, Phyllis Riggs Upright, whom he married on March 15, 1951, lived in Kannapolis for most of their lives. He was born August 13, 1929 in Rowan County, NC, the son of the late Gother T. Upright and Marie Sechler Upright. Herman served in the U.S. Army first during peacetime in Japan and later during the Korean Conflict as a paratrooper. He also was a member of the American Legion Post Beaver-Pittman Post 115. He first worked at the former Cannon Mills Company at Plant One as a supervisor. Later, he worked at Gulledge Building Supply, Kannapolis, NC for 28 years until his retirement. His interest in baseball goes back to the Army where he played in the 11th Airborne Division in Japan. He also played when the Army won the World Series. He also won a tournament in Toyko. After service he was active with the American Legion baseball for many years even excelling to Class D league baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates for some time. Herman was proud of his batting average during that time of a .391 in a tournament. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Brad Hargett. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC with military rites conducted by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home prior to the service. Survivors in addition to his wife he is survived by a brother, Kenneth Upright & wife, Janice King Upright of Kannapolis, NC.
