Herrod Heber Abernathy

Obituary: Rockwell, NC- Herrod Heber Abernathy, age 88, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the N.C. Veterans Home, Salisbury, NC after three years of declining health. He was born July 2, 1924 in Catawba County, NC, the son of the late William Pommie Abernathy and Sarah Laney Abernathy. H.H. was employed with the former Cannon Mills Company, Plant #1, #7 & #5 Weave Rooms for 50 years until his retirement. He was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC. H.H. was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II. His family fondly remembers his love of fishing, gardening, and hunting. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a grandson, Todd Abernathy; six brothers; and one sister. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Jim Gilland. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, NC with military rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday, August 6, 2012 at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of his son, Joe Abernathy, the remainder of the time. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Bradshaw Abernathy; one son, Joe Abernathy & wife, Pat of Rockwell, NC; three daughters, Judy Nichele of Charlotte, NC, Wilma Abernathy and Vicky Abernathy, both of Birmingham, AL; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
