Obituary: Hershel "Joe" Bagby, age 79, of 602 Evelyn Ave. died Friday, August 27, 2010 at CMC-NE in Concord after a period of declining health. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, August 30 at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord. Military burial rites will be conducted by the Cabarrus Co. Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the graveside after the committal. Joe was born November 1, 1930 in Yuma AZ the son of the late Raymond A. Bagby and Mrs. Christine Gentry Bagby of Rockwell. Joe was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He moved to this area from California in 1954, where he met and married Sylvia Hallman. After his discharge from the Army he went to work as a nurse for the VA Hospital in Salisbury in 1956, retiring in 1985. He saved a lot of lives during this time at the VA. He then worked for R. H. A. Homes in Rowan Co. until 1995. Joe was a past president of the American Legion in Salisbury and enjoyed working with the Boy scouts and going on archeological sites looking for Indian Artifacts and working for Dr. Cooper from Catawba College. When his health kept him inside he started researching his own genealogy and helping others with their searches on the internet. He loved the Lord and had a strong faith. Joe loved his family and will be deeply missed. In addition to his father, Joe was preceded in death by his brother Bobby Bagby. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sylvia H. Bagby and son, Joseph Mark Bagby, both of the family home. His daughter is Caramia B. Helms of Rockwell. Survivors also include grandchildren; Athena Brummett, Bobbie Joe Crotts and Rosetta Helms and great-grandchildren; Sophia and Derek Brummett and Cameron, McKenzie and Bella Crotts and 2 brothers, Bill Bagby of California and Don Bagby of Florida.
