Obituary: Homer Edwin Brinkley, 86, passed peacefully on Saturday May 8, 2010 . He was born in Kannapolis, North Carolina on Monday August 20, 1923 to James Fulton Brinkley and Mary Clayton Brinkley. Homer graduated from J.W. Cannon High School in 1941 and married the love of his life, Creola Durham on January 17, 1942. He served during WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Homer had a long and fulfilling career as a senior designer in the Civil Engineering division of Duke Power Company. Homer was a loving husband to Creola for 68 years before her death in April of this year. He was the most wonderful father to his two children, son, James Brinkley and his wife, Sandra of Charlotte and daughter, Tamara Brinkley Bucy and her husband Gregg Miller of Charlotte. His fun-loving spirit was most evident as "Papa" to his two grandchildren, Alice Bucy of Huntersville and Brandon Bucy and his wife, Kjrsten Keane, of Lexington, Virginia and two great-grandchildren, Creola Keane Bucy and Russell Keane Bucy. Homer was the third of seven children. His older brothers are J.B. Brinkley and Norman Brinkley (deceased). His younger sisters are Annie Ruth Fisher (Karl), Edith Thornburg (Ray), Helen Lawton, Janice McCombs (Gene) and sister-in-law, Mildred Brinkley. The family would like to thank all of the staff members at Lawyer's Glen Retirement Center who took such loving care of Dad and allowed him to remain "at home" during his illness. Whitley's funeral home of Kannapolis is taking care of the arrangements for Mr. Brinkley. There will be a visitation on Tuesday May 11, 2010 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am which will be followed by a graveside service at Carolina Memorial Park at 11:30. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Lawyer's Glen Retirement Center at 10850 Lawyer's Road, Charlotte, NC 28227.
