Howard Wilson Owen

Obituary: Howard Owen, age 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 3, 2017 at his home. He was born June 6, 1922 in Pinellas County, FL, the son of the late Henry Wallace Owen and Maude Evelyn Demarest Owen. He also had a step-mother, Annie Walker Owen. Howard was retired from Ames Manufacturing Company, Parkersburg, W.VA after thirty-six years of service. He was an active member of Midway United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, NC. Howard served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1940 to 1946 attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His ship assignments included the USS Kenneth Whiting (AV-14) and the USS Chandeleur (AV-10). Howard had many hobbies especially including golf, church activities, watching western movies, and reading western stories. His passion was his faith and his family. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Helen Gibson Owen; and siblings, Elmer (Wally) Wallace Owen; Ralph Demarest Owen; Henry Franklin Owen; Evelyn (Sissy) Bowman; and Margaret Scarboro. The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Midway United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Mike Collins. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC with military rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, April 7, 2017 at Whitley's Funeral Home, Kannapolis, NC. Survivors include his three sons, James Demarest Owen & wife, Susan P. Stone of Lake Lure, NC; Howard (Chip) W. Owen, II & wife, Judy of Graham, NC; and William H. Owen & wife, Debbie of Concord, NC; three grandchildren, Amy Dozier of Concord, NC; Joshua Owen & fiancée, Clare Innes of Asheville, NC; and Jennifer Champion of Gastonia, NC; four great-grandchildren, Christina Jarman, Autumn Dozier, Anna Dozier, and Abigail Dozier all of Concord, NC; one great-great-grandchild, Zephyr Jarman; and one brother, James Alfred (Al) Owen and wife, Libby; plus numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by long-time friend, Faye Owens. Memorials may be made to Midway United Methodist Church, 708 S. Main Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
