Obituary: Irene S. Edwards, 98, of Salisbury, formerly of Kannapolis; went to be with the Lord on March 2, 2016 at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks, Salisbury following a short illness. She was born August 4, 1917 in Rowan County, a daughter of the late Allen and Fannie Susan Seagraves Smith. She was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. In addition, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Schaly Edwards Brooks in 2013, and her husband, William F. Edwards on October 17, 1994. Irene was the last living Charter Member of West Point Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday school teacher for 80 years, VBS director, church clerk, WMU President and served on various church committees. She was a graduate of Cannon High School, attended Mars Hill College and was a graduate of UNC-Greensboro. She was a 55 year member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and was a hospice volunteer. Irene was well known for teaching High School English at A.L. Brown High School for 26 years. She was the grand Marshall of the Kannapolis Christmas Parade in 2015. Survivors include a daughter, Michelle Mattox and husband Tom of Swannanoa, NC, two granddaughters, Melanie Brooks Orr and Danielle Brooks, three great- grandsons, Garrett and Ryder Orr and Sage Brooks-Hakim. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, March 7, 2016 at West Point Baptist Church conducted by Pastors Charlie Littlejohn and Blair Bridle. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00-2:00 P.M. prior to the service. The family requests that in Lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Rowan County, 720 Grove Street, Salisbury, NC 28144.
