Jack Claude Murphy, Sr.

Obituary: Jack Claude Murphy, Sr., 92, of 637 Camrose Circle, Concord, and formerly of 4916 Greenbrook Dr., Charlotte, died at Morningside Assisted Living Center in Concord on Friday morning, April 13, 2012. He had been challenged with the terrible disease, Alzheimer's for many years. Born November 12, 1919, he was the son of the late Timothy Murphy and the late Percie Castevens Murphy. Mr. Murphy was a caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved the church and Jesus. He retired from Norfolk Southern and was championed by his peers as the best electrician on the railroad. He served his country during World War II from 1941 to 1945. He was a drill instructor before landing at Omaha Beach D-day, June 6, 1944. He was a S/Sgt. and platoon leader with the 29th division medical battalion. He was awarded the Certificate of Merit in recognition of "conspicuously meritorious and outstanding performance of military duty in the European theater of operations." S/Sgt. Murphy was instrumental in saving many wounded men from drowning in the strong rising tide. He exposed himself to artillery and sniper fire that morning while setting up a collection point for men wounded on the beach. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Murphy, a grandson, Shawn Murphy, brother, Raymond Murphy, and two sisters, Louise Goforth and Edith Conrad. Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia M. James, son in law, Billy James, granddaughter Carrie Deal, grandson in law, Andrew Deal, great grandsons, Jackson Deal and Landon Deal all of China Grove, son, Jack Claude Murphy, Jr., daughter in law, Carolyn S. Murphy, grandson, Ryan Murphy, granddaughter in law, Jessica Sproule, great grandson, Jacob Murphy, great granddaughter, Brooklyn Murphy all of Marietta, GA. Sister, Evelyn Browning of Winston Salem. Funeral Services will be 3:30 p.m., Sunday, April 15, 2012 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Dr. Sarah Kalish. Burial will take place at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. before the service. At other times, the family will be at the residence of the daughter, Cynthia James of China Grove.
