James Perry Austin

Obituary: James Perry "Dick" Austin, 87 of Concord passed away Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Carolina Medical Center-Northeast Concord after a brief illness of two weeks. J.P. was born May 28, 1927 in Statesville to the late Zebulon Vance Austin and the late Ethel Miller Austin. He was also preceded in death by brothers Edgar and Jesse Austin. Services will be held Wednesday, Jan 14th at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. with funeral services at 2 p.m. with Dr. James Strickland officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with Military Honors. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II at Sanford Naval Air Station, Sanford, Fl. After his retirement from his business, Austin's Masonry Construction, J.P. enjoyed fishing local lakes along with trips to the Outer Banks where he enjoyed surf fishing. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth "Tootie" Barrier Austin, two sons, Mike (Linda) of Concord, Jim (Sharon) of New London, a sister, Betty A Pipkin (Clifford) of Concord, along with three grandchildren, Chris Austin, Kenny and Kevin Baucom and great grandsons, Jesse and Josh Austin of Concord. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Sharon Baptist Church Building Fund.
