Obituary: James Allen Bost, 90, of Kannapolis, left this life November 21, at Transitional Health Services of Kannapolis. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord, NC, with military honors provided by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. Jim was born in Cabarrus County on March 11, 1924, to Lester Edwin Bost and Katie Elma Cook Bost. An older brother, Lester Edwin Bost, Jr., died in childhood. Jim attended J.W. Cannon High School, graduating in 1942. A World War II veteran, Corporal Bost served from 1943 through 1945 in the Army Air Corp in Europe as a member of the 365th Fighter Group, Hell Hawks, 388th Squadron. He married high school sweetheart Margie Virginia Propst on August 30, 1947, at Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, where he was a lifelong member and a member of the Praise Band. Jim was employed by Celanese Corp. in Charlotte, and then by Cannon Mills, where he retired in 1989. Jim was a well-known drummer and percussionist, and he played in many area bands over the years. He got his first drum set when he was 16, and that began a side career in music that lasted throughout his life, culminating in a 50-year run with The Hilighters, loved by many dancers at area senior centers. At the request of director Lou Bean, he served as drum coach of the A. L. Brown High School "Big Green Machine" marching band for several years. He and Margie also enjoyed serving as chaperones on numerous game-day trips during their daughter's involvement with the band. He even traveled with the band to an international competition in Holland. Jim claimed kin to the Scott clan through his maternal grandmother Lydia Scott, and loved Scottish bagpipes and drums. He played side-drum in the Caledonian Pipe Band of Charlotte, and enjoyed performing at the Highland Games in Grandfather Mountain. Jim and Margie loved their lives, and spent time with their many friends who gathered around good music and good times. Gardening, woodworking, and traveling were among his favorite pastimes, and Margie was his companion and partner in all things until her death in 2009 after 62 years of marriage. He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa Bost Keever and husband Dean of Kannapolis; Leslie Bost McCall and husband Johnnie of Concord; and Debra Jo Bost and husband Larry Duckworth of Hillsborough, NC. Three grandchildren were proud to call him Bopaw: Sarah Keever Linker and husband Micheal Linker, Katherine Scott Bradshaw, and Devin Joshua McCall. Memorials may be made to Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, 101 Vance Street, Kannapolis, NC, 28081. The family wishes to thank the compassionate care from staff at Transitional Health Services of Kannapolis. On-line condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com, Kannapolis, NC, who is serving the family.
