Obituary: James Blaine Coppel, Jr., 84, of China Grove died Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at the State Veterans Home in Salisbury. He was born February 9, 1932 in Danville, Illinois, the son of the late James B. Coppel, Sr. and Dorothy Coppel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Schultz Coppel and a son, Michael Coppell. James retired from Cannon Mills. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving on the USS Missouri during the Korean War. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and riding motorcycles. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5 to 7 PM Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Whitley's Funeral Home. Military honors will be observed at 6:00 PM by the Cabarrus Veterans Honor Guard. He is survived by children, Barbara Haywood of China Grove, Karl Coppell (Jeanette), Robert LaVigne (Jeneau), 12 grandchildren, including James Haywood, Dwayne Haywood and Mildred Haywood-Carl (Tony) that live here locally, 11 great grandchildren, 3 great- great- grandchildren and his brother, Robert Coppel.
