Obituary: James W. "Jim" Fink, 83, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2012 after several years of declining health. Born to the late Lonnie and Mae Fink on November 28, 1928, Jim was the oldest of three children. Jim loved baseball and played American Legion baseball for Concord. After graduating from Winecoff School High School, he played minor league baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Following his baseball career and service in the U.S. Army, Jim went to work for the Concord Telephone Company from where he retired in 1989. On February 6, 1949, Jim married Dorothy Lee "Dot" Alwran. They were married for 63 years and raised two children. Jim was an active member of Midway United Methodist Church serving on various committees and boards as well as being a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Methodist Men, and Chairman of the We Care Committee. He was also a member of the "Midway's Finest" Hot Dog Gang. In his retirement, he and Dot volunteered their time for Meals on Wheels and Cabarrus Memorial Hospital/NorthEast Medical Center. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife Dot, brother Jerry Fink, and sister Linda Chambers. Jim is survived by his two children, Dale Fink and wife Cynthia of Kannapolis; Ann Stegall and husband John of Myrtle Beach; five grandchildren - Jessica Fink, Erin Fink, James "Jake" Fink, Katelyn Stegall, and Sydny Stegall. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday September 29 at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday September 29 at Midway United Methodist Church in Kannapolis. The Rev. Dave Cash and the Rev. Burt Williams will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Midway United Methodist Church (We Care Fund), 108 Bethpage Road, Kannapolis, NC 28081. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Morning Side of Concord, Five Oaks, and Hospice for the care and compassion Jim received while there.
