Obituary: Salisbury, NC- James Carl Lackey (Shorty), age 77, died Monday, October 19, 2009 at his home after declining health of two years. He was born June 23, 1932 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son of the late James Frank Lackey and Alma Chapman Lackey. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. In earlier years he worked for the former Cannon Mill Company, Plt.#1 Bleacher Dept. for many years in Kannapolis, NC. In later years, he was a self-employed automobile mechanic and had also worked part-time for the Daily Independent newspaper as a carrier. He had a special bond with his dog, Patches, who was a constant companion. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Elswick Lackey and an adopted son, Jeffrey Lane Lackey. The funeral service will be 7:00 P.M. Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by the Hospice Chaplain Doug Hefner. Burial will be at a later date. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service. Survivors include his two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Mitchell Madison of Statesville, NC and Pamela Renee Martin of Lexington, NC; his adopted son, Randy Wade Lackey of Kannapolis, NC; his two brothers, David Lackey & wife, Linda and Danny Lackey, both of Kannapolis, NC; his fiancee, Thelma Milstead of Concord, NC; and his two special caregivers whom he loved very much, Tina Hicks and Pat Hall, both of Salisbury, NC; and a special friend, Linda Webster of Salisbury, NC.
