Obituary: Kannapolis - James Harold (Jim) Powell, Jr., age 68, of Kannapolis died April 6, 2009 at CMC NorthEast after a year of declining health. He was born January 23, 1941 in Cabarrus County. He was preceded in death by his father, James H. Powell Sr. and his mother Mary King Lomax Ritchie and his stepfather William Banks Ritchie. He retired from Hoechest-Celanese, Salisbury. He was a veteran of US Marines Corps during Vietnam War. He had formerly coached Little League baseball, youth basketball, and youth football teams in the area. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and chasing his grandchildren. He loved traveling with his wife, Sylvia G. having traveled to various places including Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Europe, and the Greek Islands. He is survived by his wife: Sylvia Geibig Powell, a son Mark Powell and wife Tina of Kannapolis, a daughter Chris Hunt and husband Paul of Haw River, a daughter Hope Whitley and husband David of Kannapolis, a daughter Charlie Power and husband Jeff of Kannapolis, and a son J.P. Powell and wife Tonya of Kannapolis, 13 grandchildren: Lucas, Marin, Marisa, Sara, Allison, Amanda, Andrew, Alexandra, Patrick, Erin, Matt, Abby, and C.J. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rev. Willie Rash. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
