James Douglas “Doug” McLain

James Douglas (Doug) McLain, 78, of Kannapolis, passed away June 19, 2023 at Bethany Woods nursing home after a long battle with dementia. He was born August 14, 1944 in Bennettsville, SC, youngest son of the late Lucien Brooks McLain, Sr. and Roberta Blanche McDuffie McLain.

Doug was a veteran of the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. He attended Wofford college where he joined the golf team, he graduated in 1971.  Doug had formerly worked for Propst Brothers Distributors and Cooperative Christian Ministries.

Doug was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a die hard Carolina Tarheel and Oklahoma Sooner fan. In earlier years, he loved playing golf, going to the beach and reading. Doug loved his family, his greatest joy in life was his daughter. His favorite times were traveling with his family and attending sporting events with his daughter.  His second greatest joy in life was becoming Papa. His grandsons were the light of his life. Doug had a heart of gold, he lived his life serving god and his community.  He was a sweet humble man who loved everyone he met and always greeted you with a hug.

Doug is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lucinda Smith McLain, daughter, Crawford McLain Stallings(Alex), grandchildren, Hayden and Linton, sister-in-laws, Mary McLain and Caroline McLain and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Doug was proceeded in death by his brothers Bobby McLain and Brooks McLain, and his brother-in-law Bill Smith.

A memorial service will be held at Whitley’s funeral home on Thursday June 22.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00, a funeral service will be held at 3:00. Interment will be private in Raleigh, NC.
