James "Pete" Luther Coleman

James Luther “Pete” Coleman, age 91, of Concord, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, February 21, 2020.

He was born on March 18, 1928 in Cabarrus County to the late William Luther Coleman and Cora Belle Springer Coleman.

He was a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon.

Pete was raised on the family farm in the Odell-Poplar Tent area. He served our country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954. He retired in 1990 from The Concord Telephone Company with 40 years of service.

A quiet man of few words, he enjoyed rabbit and deer hunting and fishing. He loved spending time on his tractor plowing gardens for family and friends and riding his John Deere lawnmower.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wives Margie Tucker Coleman and Shirley Britton Coleman; seven sisters, Virginia Beaver, Ruth Austin, Willie Maxwell, Mary Smith, Margie Coley, Faye Tucker, Mae Blackwelder and one brother, Bill Coleman.

He is survived by his daughters, Retha A. Coleman and Lisa C. Hinson (Bill); grandson, Adam Hinson, great-grandaughter, McKenzie Hinson; step-son, Terry Britton (Heather) and their daughters, Amanda Britton and Morgan Mulchi (Adam); sister, Martha Earnhardt; and brothers, Bob Coleman and W.L. Coleman Jr.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at Whitley’s Funeral Home. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 24, 2020 at Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Barrett  and Rev. Mark McClamroc officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in memory of Mr. Coleman to the donor’s choice of charity.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the nurses at Bayada for their care.
