Obituary: J.D. Sloop, 80, of Leland, NC, died August 1, 2010 in Leland. He was born March 20, 1930 in Cabarrus County, the son of the late Waldo J. Sloop and Bessie Morgan Sloop. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Holshouser Sloop on June 30, 1997 and two brothers, C.A. and Herman Sloop. J.D. worked and retired from Cannon Mills Co where he had worked in the Weave Room and the Shipping Dept. He was a member of the Peace Memorial Baptist Church in Leland where he was a member of the choir. He was an avid gardner and loved all types of flowers and plants. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel officiated by Rev. Brian McMasters and Rev. Hoyt King. Burial will follow at Brookhill Memorial Gardens in Rockwell. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Tuesday at Whitley's. He is survived by a daughter Sandra Kendall of Wilmington, a son Jackie Darrell Sloop Sr. and wife Donna of Salisbury, 6 grandchildren: Jackie Darrell Sloop Jr., David Kendall, Hannah Kendall, Daniel Sloop, Nathan Kendall and Dottie Sloop, 5 greatgrandchildren: Tyler, Harmony, Noelani, Amya and Gracie, 5 brothers: Jacob, Tommy, Franklin, Jerry and Guy Sloop and 6 sisters: Louise Goodman, Helen McGinnis, Thelma Honeycutt, Margaret York, Linda Menius and Ruth Thornburg.
