Jean Ann Atwell

Jean Ann Sain Atwell, 86, of Kannapolis, NC, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 9, 1938, in Davie County to Elmer and Beulah Sain, Jean grew up in Kannapolis, where she attended Winecoff High School.

Jean was married to her devoted husband, Donald Eugene Atwell, for 66 wonderful years until his passing. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

A woman of great compassion and service, Jean dedicated greater than 20 years to volunteering at Northeast Medical Hospital. Her tireless commitment to helping others earned her the Lifetime Presidential Award through the National Points of Light Foundation, was on the Volunteer Auxiliary Board of Directors and served as President over a period of 8 years. She also proudly served as President of the NC Hospital Volunteer Association Board of Directors, leaving a legacy of kindness and leadership. Jean was well known for wonderful sense of humor and gracious heart which made her a favorite friend to all she met.

Jean is survived by her three children and their spouses: Don Atwell Jr. and his wife, Marcia; Tina Valdez and her husband, Angel; and Angie Tedder and her husband, Ray. She was a proud grandmother to Lisa Souther and her husband, Dustin; Malia Barrett and her husband, Bryan; and Brennan Tedder. Her legacy of love continues through her two wonderful great-grandchildren, Whitley and Caroline Souther, who brought her immense joy.

Jean will be remembered for her warm heart, selfless spirit, and unwavering devotion to her family and community. Her life was a testament to love, service, and faith, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

A service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held at Carolina’s Memorial Park, at the Herron Fountain at 12:00 pm on Friday, January 17th. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Tucker Hospice House of Cabarrus County in her honor.
