Obituary: Jerry Holmes, 80, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2013 surrounded by his family at home. He was born on May 1, 1933 in Mecklenburg County, the son of the late Francis Cosby Holmes and Ethel Alexander Holmes. He was raised by his late Grandmother and his Aunt, Alice Holmes. Mr. Holmes served in Korea with the U.S. Army. He later retired with the Charlotte Fire Dept. as Battalion Chief with 30 years service. His hobbies were golfing, model airplanes, cartooning, fishing, and listening to country music. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Georgia Holmes; two daughters, Lisa Holmes of the home and Gretchen Sink (Christopher) of Harrisburg; two grandchildren, Nicola and Ethan Sink; sister, Mary Lynn Floyd; nephews, Alex and Robert Floyd of Hickory; five nieces, Judy Holmes Carias of Mt. Holly, Vickie Gibson, Georgann Moore, Kimberly Wiles Linker, Sherri Argabright; brother & sister-in-law, George & Peggy Wiles, all of Kannapolis. A private graveside service was held for Battalion Chief Holmes. Whitley's Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
