Obituary: J.J. Phillips, Jr., 64, of Kannapolis passed away on Friday, April 1, 2016 at CMC-Main in Charlotte. He was born July 11, 1951 in Cabarrus County, the son of the late Julius Jasper Phillips, Sr. and Laura Mae Hendrix Phillips. He was preceded in death by his beloved dog, Sarge. J.J. had formerly worked at Red's Oil Company and then worked and retired from the Kannapolis City Police Dept. after many years of service. He was a member of the former Cabarrus Rescue Squad. He loved to fish, hunt and camp. He loved spending time with his five grandchildren that he loved very much. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, April 4, 2016 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rev. Bill Cutshaw. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Sunday at Whitley's Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home. He is survived by his wife, Glenda Smith Phillips, two daughters, Kimberly Vaughn (Jeff), Krystal Austin (Chad), 5 grandchildren, Laura, Jaden Brooke and Trevor Vaughn, Amity and Hunter Austin, two sisters, Pansy Jones (Gerald), Sherry Dalton (Doug), his brother, Chris Phillips, his father-in-law, Rev. Ralph A. Smith and several nieces. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Assoc. 128 South Tryon St., Suite 1588 Charlotte, NC 28202 .
