Obituary: Joan Chapman Abernethy, 77, of Kannapolis, NC died Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis. Joan was born August 19, 1940 in Cabarrus County a daughter of the late Jesse Paul Chapman and the late Beryl Roberts Chapman. In addition to her parents, Joan is preceded in death by her husband, William A. (Bill) Abernethy, Sr. and a brother, Carlton Paul Chapman. Joan was formerly involved in Public education as a teacher's aide in the Wake County and Kannapolis City Schools. She formerly was an assistant manager with Waccamaw in Kannapolis. Joan was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was active in the UMW and the Frances Boone Circle. She was also a member of the Kannapolis Civic Club and served as a Democratic judge at a Kannapolis precinct. Survivors include her three daughters; Kathy G. Shockley of Rockwell, Rebecca G. Honeycutt (Terry) and Laurie A. Daniels (Scott) both of Kannapolis, two step-sons; William (Bill) Abernethy, Jr. of Matthews and Thomas Brewer Abernethy (Mary) of Cary, NC grandchildren; Chad Foster, Chris Linker, Haley Daniels, Jennifer Vargochik, Ashley Abernethy-Fishetti and Lauren Abernethy, one great-granddaughter; Layna Linker. Also by a sister, Lesley Dayvault (Gregg) of Kannapolis. The service for Joan will take place at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 15, at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Kirk Tutterow. Burial will take place at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. before the service at Whitley's.
