Obituary: Joan Orson Phelps Messenger, 86, of Kannapolis, formerly of Simsbury, Conn. went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at CHC-NorthEast Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born July 31, 1928 in Hartford, Conn. the daughter of the late Jeffery Orson Phelps IV, and Martimae Tuller Phelps. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Lyman Messenger, Jr. After moving to Kannapolis a number of years ago she joined Jackson Park United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Jet Set group. She was a member of the DAR. She was a librarian employed by the Simsbury Free Library in Simsbury, Conn. She enjoyed going to the Y and knitting. A visitation for Mrs. Messenger will be held 6:00-7:30 P.M. Thursday, June 25, 2015 at Whitley's Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence of the son. Inurnment will be at Simsbury Cemetery in Simsbury, Conn. Survivors include a son, Jeff Messenger and wife Marnie of Kannapolis. Four grandchildren, Brian Messenger, Brent Messenger, Jeff Tatem and David Messenger. She is also survived by two great grandchildren. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Jackson Park United Methodist Church, 715 Mable Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28083.
