Joe Oscar Edwards entered the presence of the Lord on Sunday, May 29, 2022.
Joe was born on February 16, 1937 to the late Doy and Claudia (Smith) Edwards of Atwell Township in Rowan County. He graduated from Landis High School in 1955 and soon after met his wife of 57 years, Maxine Love Edwards. Together they raised four sons, Keith, Dale, Mitchell and Michael in Midland, North Carolina.
Throughout his life, Joe was employed at Cannon Mills, Pen and Carol Textiles, Trailways Transportation System and The Charlotte Observer, where he retired after 28 years of employment.
Joe was actively involved with Boy Scouts of America and served as Scoutmaster of Troup 83 for thirteen years. He received the Silver Beaver Award for his tireless hard work and dedication to impacting the lives of youth. Ever committed to service, Joe and Maxine travelled throughout the world on ten mission trips building churches and ministering the love of Jesus Christ. Joe was a faithful member of Concord First Assembly (now Multiply Church) where he served as an usher and a Royal Rangers leader, equipping the next generation of Christlike men for a lifetime of service.
Joe was a sportsman who loved rabbit hunting and fishing. He was also an avid gardener who routinely blessed his community with the fruits of his labor.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his son Mitch, wife Maxine and sister Naomi Scarborough.
Left to cherish his memory are sons Reverend Keith Edwards (Anita) of Liberty, Dale Edwards (Connie) of Salisbury, and Mike Edwards (Diane) of Charlotte. Siblings Hilda Chester, Alice Martin, Irene Ashley, Shirley Barry (Bill), Jerry Edwards (Rachel), Bill Edwards, and Donnie Edwards (Kim). Eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
The Edwards family is so appreciative for the loving care which was extended to Joe from the staff of Morningside of Concord. Though we are deeply saddened and will greatly miss him, we rejoice knowing that Joe is at home with his Savior, beloved wife Maxine, and much loved son Mitch.
The family will receive friends at 10am Friday, June 3, 2022 at Whitley’s Funeral Home. Service will follow at 11am in the chapel with Reverend Brad Hargett officiating. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park.
