Obituary: John Joseph "Joe" Basinger4/7/1948 - 10/25/2011Kannapolis, NC Joe Basinger passed away Tuesday morning from an illness. Joe attended South Rowan High School and served in the US Navy as a Boatswains' Mate from 1967 to 1971 on amphibious assault ships in Little Creek, VA and Panama among other places in the Atlantic and Caribbean. Joe was good with his hands and was an excellent finish carpenter and inside painter. Joe had a passion for music. He loved performing, playing guitar and singing at restaurants, bars and parties achieving local renown as "Rock n' Roll Joe". Joe is survived by his mother Ernestine E. "Tiney" Basinger of Kannapolis, NC; sisters, Judy Heath of Castle Hayne, NC and Martha Sessoms of New London, NC; and brothers Robert Basinger of Wilmington, NC and Andy Basinger of Winston Salem, NC and many well loved nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his father Marshall Jack Basinger of Kannapolis. A memorial service will be held at noon Thursday, Oct. 27, at North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church, 314 W. 12th Street, Kannapolis, NC, 28081. Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis is handling the arrangements.
