Obituary: John Machonis III (aka Choner), 53, passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at his home in Charlotte, NC. John was born on March 31, 1964 in Worcester, MA to John and Edie Machonis and grew up in Schaumburg, IL (suburb of Chicago. John had an undeniable passion for all sports - especially hockey and baseball. He was an All Star baseball player in Little League. He played hockey for the Schaumburg Kings and was a two-time recipient of the Brian Masino Award for Outstanding Goal Tending. He attend Schaumburg High School where he played baseball for 2 years and was a hockey goalie for 4 years. In 1979, he attended the Olympic Training Camp for Goal Tending. John graduated from Schaumburg High School in 1983, Bridgton Academy in 1984, and Drake University in 1988, where he belonged to the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Fueled by his love of sports, John lived life to the fullest, always cheering on his favorite teams - Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Cubs, and Atlanta Falcons. Horse Racing, (especially attending the Kentucky Derby) was a passion he shared with his family. John was an extraordinary Salesman and Sales Manager, with a special gift for mentoring. John was a true people-person. Everyone he met became a new friend, building a new chapter in his life story. John had a way of making everything simple and fun. He lived his life as a go-getter with a hunger for adventure and spontaneity. Being an animal lover, he had a special place in his heart for his fur-babies. John is survived by his wife, Carol Rapp; two sons, Tyler Rapp (Leslie Rapp), and Kevin Machonis (Alexis Machonis); parents, John and Edie Machonis; brother, Jim Machonis (Laura Machonis); nephew, Chris Machonis. Extended family, two sisters, Cyndi Miller and Sharon Rapp; father-in-law, Fred Rapp; two nephews, Mark Miller and Matt Miller (Beth Miller). The family will receive friends from 3:00pm - 4:00pm Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Whitley's Funeral Home 1748 Dale Earnhardt Blvd, Kannapolis, NC 28083 (704.933.2222). Service will be held at Whitley's at 4:00pm. Donations can be made in John's memory to: Humane Society, American Heart Association, and American Diabetes Association.
