John William Mccombs, Jr.

Obituary: John William McCombs, Jr. (J.W.), age 90, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at his home. J.W. was born April 20, 1925 in Rowan County, NC, the son of the late John William McCombs, Sr. and Cora Lee Smith McCombs. He graduated J.W. Cannon High School and entered the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star for outstanding service in Belgium and Germany. J.W. worked at the former Cannon Mills Company, Plant Four Machine Shop. He worked there for forty-two years until his retirement. He was a life-long member at Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC where he had served in the choir and the Men's Chorus for many years. J.W. also served on the church council and various phases of church activities. From childhood bluegrass music was a passion of his. After the war he played guitar in a band in Germany. Music was an important part of J.W.'s life until he died. As a member of the former Torch Club at the old YMCA founded in the 1950s, he was one of only two surviving members who still held meetings. He was also a member of the Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge No. 626. J.W. learned watch-making from his father and continued repairing watches for years. J.W. was well-respected, consistent, and trustworthy with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Towell McCombs; brother, Carl D. McCombs; sister, Mary McCombs; and sister-in-law, Mildred W. McCombs. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, May 17, 2015 at Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Scott Swix. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 PM Sunday at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Carolina Memorial Park with military rites conducted by the NC Army National Guard. Survivors include his daughter, Cathy M. Young & husband, David of Kannapolis, NC; his son, Jeff W. McCombs & wife, Robin of Concord, NC; grandchildren, Natalie Young, Jennifer Young & husband, Joe, Josh McCombs, and Zac McCombs & wife, Lisa; and great-grandchildren, Macy, Levin, Landon, Logan, Lincoln, Zoe, and Elizabeth; a niece, Lisa Dunlow, and a nephew, Danny McCombs. The family will be at the home of Cathy and Dave Young, 6703 Bealgray Road, Kannapolis, N Memorials may be made to Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, 101 Vance Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
